That’s a long time. ECW is one of the most influential wrestling promotions of all time as it showed the world that independent promotions could do something special if they were given the chance. One of their major milestones was their first pay per view “Barely Legal”, which recently reached its twenty year anniversary. Paul Heyman had some new comments on the show.

Heyman recently appeared on “Busted Open Radio” and talked about the anniversary, which is something he’s rather proud of. He talks about not looking back too often, but there are some things that you just have to look back on and smile, such as this show. Here are the comments, with transcription courtesy of 411wrestling.com:

“20 years ago is a long time and I feel like I’ve lived many lives. In that way I’m a very blessed man. Just to pull that off and to be part of it, and at 31-years-old, it’s the old thing where they say ‘they won’t be able to take that away from you.’ I don’t look back often, but I’m very humbled.”

Opinion: Honestly, how can you argue with Heyman on this? In 1997, ECW was five years (at most) removed from being a nothing independent promotion that ran hardcore style matches. Then they’re airing on pay per view and eventually get a national TV deal. That’s an amazing story and something that you don’t get in wrestling, or in most forms of entertainment, but they pulled it off and should be proud of that.
