I remember that one. There have been more angles than anyone can remember in wrestling but some of them are a bit more memorable than others. Those are ideas that you might see used again years later, in some cases almost to the letter. We seem to have seen that again last week, and now one of the people involved in the original version is revealing an interesting detail.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Last Minute: Update On Original Main Event Plans For NXT Battleground
Last week on SmackDown, AJ Styles teased retirement before attacking WWE Universal Champion Cody Rhodes instead. This was similar to Mark Henry teasing retirement and attacking John Cena in 2013. Henry spoke about the Cena segment during a recent edition of Busted Open Radio, revealing that he turned down the chance to be WWE Champion. Henry revealed that he did not want to be WWE Champion at this point, as he did not feel his body could handle the stress of being the top star. He made it clear that the decision to not become champion was his and not WWE’s idea.
It was a special moment. Check out what Styles did, how we got here, and Henry’s version:
Opinion: I don’t think they were exactly hiding what they were going for with Styles as he was even wearing a rather colorful jacket ala Henry. That’s the kind of thing that can make for a special moment, as you can see an interesting segment while also doing something that is a bit of a callback for long time fans. The original segment was about eleven years ago so it’s hardly some idea that has been beaten into the ground.
What did you think of the segment? Did you want Henry to win the title? Let us know in the comments below.
