The card keeps growing. We are rapidly approaching this year’s Royal Rumble and that means it is time to get the card set up. The show will again be built around the idea of two Royal Rumble matches, but that is going to cause some issues when you consider that sixty names are likely off the books for the big matches. You can throw a few wrestlers out there twice, but this time around, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
SmackDown’s women’s division has done some rather good stuff in the last year with Bayley and Sasha Banks spearing the effort. As a result, the pair of them more or less cleared out the division, which leaves Banks, the current Women’s Champion, needing some fresh challengers to come after the title. It can take some time to build that up, but Banks already has her next defense set.
This week on SmackDown, Banks faced and defeated Carmella’s sommellier Reginald in an intergender match. As per the previously announced stipulation, this allowed Carmella to challenge Banks for the Women’s Title at the Royal Rumble. This will be their third title match in less than two months with the pair splitting the first two matches, including Carmella winning via disqualification.
Opinion: This isn’t exactly a surprise and there is nothing wrong with finalizing a match that had already been all but set up. Banks is likely heading to a big title match at WrestleMania and beating Carmella in a high profile showdown should work out fine. Hopefully the match works, as Carmella can do some good things when she is given the right circumstances.
