The Eddie Guerrero Tribute match. Back in November 2005, Eddie Guerrero suddenly passed away from heart failure. This was one of the most shocking deaths in wrestling and a major blow to WWE, as Guerrero was one of the top players on “Smackdown” and feuding with Batista for the World Heavyweight Championship. His death changed a lot of things, but one thing it changed in particular was the rise of Rey Mysterio. After Guerrero’s death, Mysterio won the 2006 Royal Rumble in his honor, sending him on to this match.
And it’s an emotional one.
Opinion: This match may not have been great but it was all about the emotion anyway. The fans wanted to see Mysterio win the title in Guerrero’s honor and that’s exactly what they got. It was a great moment and set things up for Mysterio, who became one of the most surprising World Champions of all time. This was a feel good moment and sometimes, that’s much better than a great match. I could have gone for the match being longer to sell Mysterio being more of an underdog, but what we got worked quite well enough.
