The final push. We are less than three days away from NXT Takeover: XXX and that means everything should be ready to go. WWE doesn’t tend to work that way though and they still have time to add in a few more things to the card. In this case, something needed to be set for one of the bigger matches on the card. Those spots were set up during this week’s edition on NXT.

Over the last few weeks, NXT has been without a North American Champion. Keith Lee vacated the title not long after winning the NXT Title, meaning it was time to crown a new champion. A ladder match for the vacant title was announced for Takeover with five participants being determined in a series of triple threats. Dexter Lumis had qualified but injured his ankle, meaning his spot was open. Therefore, two singles matches between people who were not pinned in the triple threat matches were held. So who made it in?

During this week’s NXT, Johnny Gargano and Velveteen Dream qualified for the Takeover: XXX ladder match for the vacant North American Title. Gargano opened the show by defeating Ridge Holland, followed by Dream beating Balor in the main event. Gargano defeated Balor using a low blow and Dream defeated Balor after interference from Timothy Thatcher and the other entrants in the ladder match.

They were big matches. Check out how they qualified:

Opinion: Neither of these are exactly surprising as Gargano and Dream are the kind of names who need to be in the match to give it some extra star power. Both have held the title before and without having them in there, a win by any of the less established names wouldn’t mean as much. Then again there is always the chance that Gargano or Dream could win the title themselves, which makes things all the more interesting.
