It was a long time coming. Tonight, for the third time in less than a month, AJ Styles was scheduled to defend the Smackdown World Title against James Ellsworth. The match was set up a few weeks back when Ellsworth beat Styles for the third time in a row but had been delayed by an ankle injury and a nasty cold. Tonight the match was finally scheduled to take place.
It did indeed take place….and Styles defeated Ellsworth in less than a minute off a backfist to the face. This makes Ellsworth 3-1 against Styles and also earned him a post match beatdown which is likely going to write him off TV for a little while. Styles catapulted Ellsworth into the bottom of the ring, sending him off on a stretcher.
This was exactly what it should have been and there’s nothing wrong with that. Styles is still healing up from an ankle injury so it was smart to let him have such a short match where he barely had to do anything. Ellsworth isn’t worth the time so just let him lose like he should after gaining more than he could ever hope to otherwise.
