The landscape of NXT can change in an instant.
Initial Warning
There will be spoilers ahead. You have been warned. These spoilers have to do with the latest NXT tapings that have just concluded at Full Sail University. The Championship change will not likely air on television for a few weeks, so click away now if you do not wish to be spoiled.
So what happened?
We previously reported that Velveteen Dream had won the Worlds Collide tournament. His victory earned him a shot at any Championship in NXT. Many thought this would mean a feud between Dream and NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa, given their history, but it appears that isn’t the case.
During the tapings, Dream hit the ring to announce that he wasn’t after Ciampa or his Championship. Rather, he wanted Johnny Gargano. He wanted the NXT North American Championship, and he claimed he would use the opportunity he received from winning the tournament to take on Gargano.

The main event for the tapings was the NXT North American Championship bout between Gargano and Dream. As you may now realize, Dream was victorious and is the new Champion.

His celebration was short-lived, though, as he was attacked by Gargano after the match. He would steal the NXT North American Championship and leave to pose with Ciampa. He eyes off Ciampa’s Championship on the way out.

The fact remains. Dream is the NEW North American Champion, leaving Full Sail University as the rightful title holder.
What is next?
At the conclusion of NXT TakeOver: Phoenix, WWE taped an interaction between Ciampa, Gargano, Dream, Ricochet, Aleister Black and Adam Cole.
This would set up WWE Halftime Heat, which will take place this Sunday. See the quick teaser below:
Stay tuned to NXT TV over the coming weeks for confirmation of this match.
Editor’s Note:
I am happy with the Championship title change. I imagine this teases the final confrontation between Gargano and Ciampa for WrestleMania weekend, which would likely see Gargano finally be crowned NXT Champion.
Do you think Dream will have a lengthy reign as Champion? Do you think Gargano will feud will Ciampa during WrestleMania season?
