WWE has gotten the attention of its fans through its constant endorsement of the WWE Network, most notably, for its price. The chants and signs for “$9.99” have echoed and been featured throughout WWE arenas, and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
As noted in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, despite financial struggles, WWE reportedly has no plans on raising or changing the monthly rate for the online service anytime soon. Company Chief Revenue Officer and Chief Marketing Office Michelle Wilson confirmed such earlier this week.
According to the report, much of this has to do with two factors. The first is based around the fact $9.99 has been pushed so hard on television that it would be hard to go back upon the company’s word on delivering it. While the next payment cycle isn’t up until after the “Royal Rumble” pay-per-view, the number will have stuck long enough to be synonymous at that point.
The additional factor is a deal CBS just announced that will allow people to stream its content for just $5.99 a month. According to Dave Meltzer, this then in turn puts more pressure for other distributors, especially for sports-entertainment, to not consider price increases.
As noted recently, WWE will announce its third quarter reports Oct. 30. The network has also started airing advertisements to increase revenue. WWE Network sales have fallen well short of initial expectations, though a rebound has been expected.
Editor’s Note
When you’re drawing low television ratings, wouldn’t that be another factor? Just a thought.
