Last month, the wrestling world was taken by shock when it lost one of its legends. WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes died suddenly at the age of 69, creating a major period of mourning within the wrestling community.
Tributes from all over social media began pouring in for the departed star. WWE aired a special on the WWE Network that paid respects to Rhodes, featuring comments from current and former WWE and NXT Superstars. The special was widely praised, garnering genuine emotion from all those interviewed.
It appears WWE is not done giving respect to “The American Dream,” however.
WWE announced this week it will be airing a live Dusty Rhodes tribute following “Monday Night Raw” next week in Chicago, Illinois. They synopsis reads as such:
“Live from Chicago, WWE celebrates the life and career of Dusty Rhodes, as told by WWE Legends and Superstars.”
The special will air on the WWE Network, which is now free for a month for all new subscribers going forward. It is very likely this, along with the Tokyo special being broadcast Saturday, are to aid in tempting subscribers with new content.
Perhaps most interesting with the timing is one of Rhodes’ own family members. His son Cody, who portrays Stardust on WWE television, will be making his return to the road this upcoming week after taking several weeks off to mourn the passing of his father. It is unknown where they will go with Stardust’s gimmick, whether it will remain the same (as it is already an homage to his father) or if it will be taken in another direction.
Stardust has seldom been heard from following his father’s death, however, he did post his eulogy read at his dad’s funeral.
Editor’s Note
Interesting. We’re approaching almost a month since his death. Hopefully, it’s a quality tribute and not just milking.
