The Wrestling Observer has provided an update on the type of content that will be airing on the WWE Network, and some of the details surrounding the network’s launch on Feb. 24 are certainly interesting.
Most notably will be the amount of content available upon launch. According to the report, only 1.5 percent of WWE’s entire video library, or roughly 1,500 hours, will be available at first. It is likely that over time, WWE will continue to post things and expand weekly, which will provide the opportunity for it to continue crafting its constantly-growing library. Some believe WWE may also take down some content after a while as well.
With some of this content will be the issue of mainstream music, however. WWE executive Perkins Miller noted that this would be handled on a “case by case” basis, as promotions in the 80s and especially ECW often used trademarked music. This means that WWE would need to pay additional royalty fees.
Additionally, as reported earlier, Chris Benoit will be shown on the WWE Network for sure with a disclaimer. However, there is now further insight as to what else will appear that may not have been seen before. Commentary featuring Jesse “The Body” Ventura will indeed show up on the network, despite WWE having had royalty issues with him in the past. The ring announcing of Gary Michael Cappetta will also be featured, though he has had legal issues with the usage of his likeness in the past.
The network will launch at 11:05 p.m. ET on Feb. 24 following Monday Night Raw.
