According to a TIME report on Monday, the WWE fan-turned-participant, Stewart, made several remarks towards politics and politicians during his first moments on the SummerSlam pay-per-view.
“Let me tell you the difference between politics and what you’re going to see tonight,” Stewart said during his introduction as he worked up the audience. “WWE performers you’re going to see tonight, they respect their audience.”
“I’ve spent the last 16 years talking about politics,” Stewart added during his early speech in the ring. “It’s nice to be back in reality.”
When Stewart showed up with a chair later in the event during John Cena’s match against WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, most fans probably believed that the comedian, actor and PPV host would smash Rollins with the object. Stewart and Rollins had been in a feud weeks ago which saw the two trade barbs on social media and eventually meet in the ring for a segment on Raw. On this occasion, Stewart surprised most fans when he hit John Cena in the stomach with the steel chair. That led to Rollins hitting The Pedigree on Cena face-first into the chair and collecting the winning pin, as Stewart scampered away backstage.
The outcome was enough to outrage many members of the WWE Universe as Rollins now holds both the World Heavyweight and United States Championship belts. As for Stewart, his involvement has been making the various media circuits on Monday including ABC’s “Good Morning America,” and ESPN. Stewart has yet to offer any post-match comments on why he did what he did, but plenty of fans have been expressing their anger and frustration over his actions ahead of Monday night’s episode of Raw.
