We’ve heard rumblings about independent wrestling programs coming to the WWE Network, and some surveys has been sent out inquiring what promotions subscribers would like to see represented.
Reports from Wrestling Observer suggest that these plans are very likely to come to fruition. Vince McMahon wants “hot indies” on the service, which is an obvious switch from the company’s previous position on rival groups.
Several promotions, including Revolution Pro, Progress, ICW, and WCPW have been in contact with WWE about being part of their streaming service, though they’ve also been talking to the rival service offered by FloSlam. No deals have been reached yet, but given WWE’s partnership with Progress and Revolution Pro for the Cruiserweight Classic it seems the relationship there is already strong.
It would certainly be a major boon to the WWE Network for hardcore fans, though there is an unfortunate problem that comes alongside. With the volume of content WWE already produces–even with just the weekly wrestling shows, not counting the backstage and interview programs–it would be very difficult for most fans to consider adding another show to their weekly viewing.
The other problem is that given how many other promotions have developed their own streaming solutions, from Chikara to NJPW, partnerships would force some out of a WWE deal. Would a given indie sign up with the WWE Network if it meant New Japan wrestlers couldn’t appear on their show?
Still, with WWE taking an unprecedented interest in independent wrestling, it seems a few companies at least will have greater exposure than ever before.
