WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin recently sat down with former WWE, WCW, and TNA superstar Scott Hall to talk about wrestling, drinking, and more on his podcast, The Steve Austin Show. Here are some notable quotes from the program.
Hall on Austin’s gimmick change from “Stunning” Steve Austin to “The Ringmaster”:
“Well, Steve, to be honest with ya, I felt that Vince just didn’t know what to do with you. I mean honestly you had great ring skills, good presence, good mic skills, but they didn’t know what to do with you at that time. You know I think they did the best that they could, putting Ted Dibiase in there with ya too, but…”
Hall on drinking heavily:
“I was one of those guys who never really started drinking heavily until my late thirties – I was no angel before that, I just wasn’t drinking or taking pills. A lot of the business was done in bars at that time. You had to get to know your opponent and have some what of a relationship with them outside the ring, so you could produce a good product inside the ring … The guys I was hanging out with – the guys I looked up to – a lot of that was going on. So I ventured down that path as well.”
Hall on the incident shown in his “ESPN: 60” mini-documentary where he appears during a wrestling event completely out of it, just hours after being released from the hospital:
“I don’t know if it was multiple concussion syndrome, or whatever, I was having some brain deficit and epileptic seizures pretty regularly. I was on meds, but I had this trip coming up because P.J. Walker and Justin Credible was working there, and I was gonna go just to see my buddies. I had a seizure and fell in my home, and injured my hip – which was already shot – again. I limp into the hospital for the doctor to see my heart, and he asked if I needed something for the pain. I had some [Vicodin] and somas and some Xanax … Brother, when I got off that plane, I didn’t know what country I was in.”
Hall on moving out of the “Accountability Crib”:
“I’m helpin my son Cody get set up with a place here…He’s a pro wrestler, he’s had ten matches so far, and there’s a lot more happening for an indy scene wrestler here in Georgia than there is in Central Florida. [So] we’re setting Cody up in a place because I’m going to probably end up back in Florida. The place that Cody and I will be moving Steve is literally walking distance from Dally’s.”
Hall on whether or not it’s smart for him to be in Florida alone:
“Probably not Steve. I’ll never “live” there again. I’m gonna go there because my daughter lives there…I have some property in central Florida that’s hard to sell; nobody really wants it. I may just go empty the house. I may look for a place here…I’m looking at a situation to maybe live in Miami – spend a time in Orlando, and some time here in Atlanta. I don’t think being in that house will be that healthy for me. I’ve been told that for years, but it was my ex-wife’s dream house so I liked it … Probably not a good idea bro, because I’ve got twenty acres in the woods with a private behind me with no neighbors. It’s easy for me to seclude myself, which I’ve learned from lots of therapy that maybe isn’t the best thing.”
