New reports have provided some backstage news regarding Goldust’s health and status with WWE following his surgery. As previously reported, Goldust (real name Dustin Runnels), had surgery on his shoulder on May 12 and is expected to miss up to four months of action.
Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter claims that it will be difficult for Goldust to be a featured star on WWE’s main roster once he returns. He credits the difficulty to Runnel’s age, and to the fact that WWE doesn’t have anything creatively for him.
Meltzer writes,
“Dustin Runnels (Goldust), 46, has his shoulder surgery this week. He’ll be out probably six months and given the age and WWE liking a younger crew, it’s going to be tough for him to get back in the mix, particularly since they aren’t going to do the feud with Cody. While he’s a very good worker, his only real role was with the Rhodes Brothers tag team and once they started phasing that out, it wasn’t good for him.”
Knowing Meltzer’s opinion is only just that, an opinion, although shared all over the Internet for thousands of fans to read, Goldust himself recently commented on the reports that it would be a “struggle” for him to find a spot back on television once he is fully recovered from surgery. Runnels took to Twitter to make his statement and respond to Meltzer, saying,
To you know who: age is just a number. Having the best years ever. I’ll take my spot on the roster back as soon as i am healed. #WriteThat!!

Editor’s Note:
I love Goldust. There aren’t a lot of matches that he’s been a part of that you can call bad. A few misses, yes, but he’s one of the best workers in the ring…maybe ever, and he has been doing some of his best work in the ring over the last two years since his return to the company.
