The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that a segment during the Aug. 4 edition of “Monday Night Raw” may have been booked solely to “rip on” WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross. The segment was a “Red River Shoot-out” Match between former Texas Longhorn Mark Henry, and Damien Sandow, who was dressed up like a football player from Ross’s beloved Collegiate Football team, the Oklahoma Sooners.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter writes,
“This [segment] came across like an excuse to rip on Jim Ross, which does get old given it’s been nearly a year since he’s been gone.
Layfield [JBL] made a remark about how nobody from Oklahoma knows barbecue.
I can get playing off Texas vs. Oklahoma for the live crowd and comedy, but it was really mean-spirited in the announcing on Oklahoma and I don’t know why if you’re WWE that you want to insult a fan base in any state.”
JBL’s shot at JR was easily noticed by many fans on Twitter. Ross is a self-professed connoisseur of barbecue, making sauces and rubs and selling them through WWEShop.com, as well as JRsBarBQ.com and various stores.
It has been noted that many times Vince McMahon is behind most of the things JBL says on commentary, and given McMahon and Ross’s past, he could have been the one to feed JBL that zinger.
Editor’s Note:
Come on man. Was it REALLY Dave Meltzer? Why still rip on Ross? When Vince finally passes away, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Triple H hire Ross back immediately. Triple H loves Ross, as does the WWE Universe.
