The new edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter provides some interesting news on Rey Mysterio’s current contract with WWE. According to the report, Mysterio’s deal was extended for a year by Vince McMahon due to the company believing that he “owes them time.”
Mysterio’s contract reportedly expired a few weeks ago. He the received word that McMahon had renewed it for a year. The original contract did not have an option for McMahon to extend it this way, as WWE contracts are genuinely allowed to be frozen while talents are dealing with injuries.
However, according to the report, McMahon and WWE executives extended Mysterio’s contract a year because they feel like he owes them time. The thought was that he was injured so much during his originally agreed to contract length, that he now has to work for the company through May, 2015 to make up for time lost.
Currently, Mysterio is out of action due to a hand injury, but it is his knees that he has had the most problems with. Mysterio recently returned from rehabilitating a knee injury, and has only worked select dates in order to try and stay healthy. While Mysterio is on contract until 2015, it is unsure of how much he’ll be used for in-ring competition during the rest of his time in WWE. He more than likely be used for promotional materials, merchandise, and appearances than wrestling.
Editor’s Note:
Wow. I mean, Mysterio has been out a LOT over the last 4-5 years due to injuries. If I were Vince McMahon, I may have made the same call. Mysterio used to be a big name in regards to merchandise sales.
