The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter had provided further details regarding Alberto Del Rio’s settlement with WWE. As previously reported, both Del Rio and WWE announced on Nov. 10 that they had reached a settlement in regards to the company’s standing “no compete” clause on Del Rio, and that he was free to work wherever he pleases.
According to reports, it is believed that both parties agreed on the terms of the settlement, even though WWE backed out of a public apology. WWE asked that Del Rio would stop making public comments about racism in WWE, and Del Rio had to agree to not sue the company.
As previously reported, Del Rio has been openly discussing the racial slurs and jokes that went on regularly behind-the-scenes during his tenure with WWE. Del Rio even went as far as to saying that racism exist so openly within the company because top officials, such as Triple H, were participating, making it feel normal and “okay” to everyone else underneath them.
Del Rio was released form WWE in August because of an altercation with a fellow employee. A social media worker made a racial joke about Del Rio, and the former WWE Champion slapped him to the ground. After being told initially that he would only be suspended for the events that took place, Triple H later called Del Rio and informed him that the company was letting him go to avoid any legal issues from the “attack.”
Del Rio is barred for making any more negative comments about WWE through their settlement, but he does get to work wherever he would like. Del Rio announced shortly before the two parties confirmed the settlement exists, that he will be joining the Lucha Libre promotion, Lucha Underground, in 2015.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter claims that a source close to both parties and the settlement told the publishers that the deal was made “last minute.” The joint statement from both parties was to include a WWE issued apology for the inappropriate comments made about Del Rio and others. However, the company had that part of the settlement taken out of their official written agreement.
Del Rio had already agreed to the financial settlement and to the abolishment of the “no compete” clause in his contract, so he did not push the apology issue once the written agreement was placed in front of his representatives.
Editor’s Note:
Wow. This world is crazy. Racism gets pushed aside whenever you get a little bit of what you want, eh? Do you think WWE should apologize for their racist actions behind-the-curtain?
