Newly crowned “Paul Heyman Guy” and former United States Champion Cesaro is reportedly set to face Big E for the Intercontinental Championship at “Extreme Rules” on May 4. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a tournament to determine the Number One Contender for the Intercontinental strap was not the original plan. A Fatal 4-Way bout was originally scripted for “Monday Night Raw” with Cesaro being the victor, but the match was scrapped and repackaged as a three-week long tournament.
As we previously reported, Christian was set to be the next Number One Contender for the Intercontinental Championship, but suffered an injury just before WrestleMania XXX. The company then decided that Cesaro would get the next shot at Big E’s title, which will be contested for at “Extreme Rules.”
The report claims that Cesaro was slated to win a Fatal 4-Way featuring Big Show, Jack Swagger, and possibly Christian, but Vince McMahon himself made the switch before “Monday Night Raw” went live. He reportedly felt that a Fatal 4-Way would not elevate the Intercontinental Championship, nor its new Number One Contender, as effectively as a tournament.
With Cesaro being the man WWE Creative was going to push in the Fatal 4-Way, it is rumored that he will successfully defeat every competitor in the tournament to solidify himself as the new Number One Contender for the Intercontinental Championship. This will pit him against Big E on May 4 at “Extreme Rules”
Editor’s Note: It looks like the “King of Swing” will be winning some gold at “Extreme Rules.” Throwing him a bone like Paul Heyman means he’s about to be pushed to the moon, and in WWE terms, it means that if he faces Big E for the IC strap on May 4, he’s likely walking out with some new weighted leather draped upon his shoulder.
