The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has provided some backstage news on Stardust and his potential return to WWE programming. As previously reported, Stardust (Cody Rhodes), was scheduled to return to action on July 6 during “Monday Night Raw,” but plans were changed and he didn’t appear.
Dave Meltzer of F4Wonline.com claims that Rhodes was indeed backstage during “RAW” on July 6, but wasn’t used. He goes on to speculate on why he wasn’t on the show, which is likely due to WWE Creative being unsure of how to use him now.
Rhodes’ father, WWE Hall of Famer “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, passed away in June, and Stardust has been off of WWE television since his passing. He’s also remained relatively quiet from the Stardust account on Twitter, aside from breaking character to share the eulogy he read at his father’s funeral.
Meltzer claims WWE likely doesn’t know how to use the superstar currently, as he was a heel prior to his father’s death. The company is likely keeping him off television in hopes that the WWE Universe will not cheer for him, as they want to keep him as a heel moving forward. He writes,
“Cody Rhodes was back at TV this week but wasn’t used. They should change him out of Stardust because the Stardust thing totally lost steam.
Plus, it’s going to be hard, not impossible, but hard for him to be a heel because people really don’t want to boo a guy whose father just passed away. It may be why they are keeping him off TV figuring he’ll get cheered and they don’t want to turn him.”
Stardust was originally slated to work a program with Stephen Amell of the hit show “Arrow” at WWE “SummerSlam” in August. However, plans for that bout have reportedly been scrapped, even with Amell continuing to tease an appearance at the show.
Editor’s Note:
I do wonder what they’re going to do with him when he returns. He needs to be in the IC title picture. He’s such a great hand in the ring.
