It had been previously reported that the XFL had ceased all operations and was not looking to be returning for the 2021 season. That may be more of a reality, based on the events of today.
According to a report from ESPN, the XFL has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, on the first business day after the league had laid off almost all of its employees. They released a statement, which you can see below:
“The XFL quickly captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of people who love football. Unfortunately, as a new enterprise, we were not insulated from the harsh economic impacts and uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, we have filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. This is a heartbreaking time for many, including our passionate fans, players and staff, and we are thankful to them, our television partners, and the many Americans who rallied to the XFL for the love of football.”
The first-ever kickoff took place only two months ago:
Vince McMahon, the owner of the XFL, has not spoken publicly about the situation. However, a source close to the bankruptcy filing said the league could be sold during the process.
We will continue to monitor this story and provide any updates as they become available to us.
Editor’s Opinion:
Man, this really sucks for everyone involved with the league. Not only had the XFL struck television deals with many of the major networks, but fans were coming to games and people were really getting excited about what this brand of football could be. I just hope that in its 3rd iteration, the league will finally be up and running and become a permanent fixture in the world of sports.
