13. Jon Stewart Costs John Cena the US Title at “SummerSlam”
The mainstream media rivalry between Seth Rollins and Jon Stewart had become a thing of legend in 2015, so everyone knew that Stewart was going to ensure that John Cena walked out of “SummerSlam” as both the WWE United States and World Heavyweight Champion, right?
Wrong.
In a shocking twist of fate, Stewart hit Cena in the stomach with a chair while the referee was down, allowing Rollins to capture both titles, becoming the first superstar to hold both titles at the same time.
Stewart came out the following night on “Raw” and said that the reason for his actions was to ensure that no one would ever tie Ric Flair’s record of 16 World Championships. Both Flair and Cena took exception to this however, and Cena ended up laying out Stewart with the patented AA.
The reason this makes the list is because it showcases how much mainstream media attention WWE has received over the past year. With Stewart appearing at “SummerSlam” and ESPN now having a wrestling-related segment each week hosted by Jonathan Coachman, WWE is reaching a vast new audience, which will undoubtedly create more legitimacy for the product over the long term.
