Tonight at SummerSlam, history was made, when Ronda Rousey defeated Alexa Bliss in convincing fashion to capture the Raw Women’s Championship for the first time.
And it wasn’t even close.
Right from the beginning, The Baddest Woman on the Planet proved to be such, as she came out, guns blazing, and brought the fight right to The Goddess. Strike after strike, Rousey asserted dominance from the start and never let up.
In fact, this match reminded me a lot of when Brock Lesnar squashed John Cena a few years ago at SummerSlam 2014 to capture the WWE Championship.
As I was watching Rousey fight and thinking about her entire career in WWE, since debuting at the Royal Rumble earlier this year, I have been nothing short of incredibly impressed with her athleticism, promo skills and believability as a superstar. And that has led me to one thought.
In my opinion, tonight at SummerSlam 2018, Ronda Rousey became the most important champion in WWE.
Let’s take some things into consideration:
She may have the most mainstream appeal of anyone in the company. Rousey garners attention from WWE, ESPN and many other sports outlets, and people always pay attention whenever her name is brought up. She even got to be a part of Shark Week earlier this summer, and have her own special.
In every match that Rousey has been in, she has looked like a natural. Her transition to professional wrestling has been almost flawless, and I think that she looks amazing every time that she competes.
Finally, and this may be the most important point: She’s BELIEVABLE as a dominating champion. She throws her opponents like rag dolls, and owns her competition in convincing fashion.
She is the female version of Brock Lesnar. Except she shows up every week, and actually gives a damn about the company she works for.
And now that Lesnar is no longer the Universal Champion, this really opens up the door for Rousey to take her place as the most important and legitimate champion in WWE.
Now there are some that will criticize her style and say that she is too rough with the people that she competes with. But, this is not ballet, it’s wrestling. And people are going to get hurt occasionally.
I’d much rather see that, then a slow-paced, safe match that doesn’t go anywhere. And so would the crowd.
Ronda Rousey gets a massive pop every time that she enters the arena. She’s personable as a person, incredible in the ring and looks like she genuinely cares about being a member of the WWE roster.
She’s going to be around for a long time. And that is completely fine by me.
