Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Randy Orton, Batista and The Rock. Those are just some of the names 14-time World Champion John Cena has competed against at WrestleMania’s in the past.
Enter Bray Wyatt.
“The Eater of Worlds” and the leader of The Wyatt Family will join those aforementioned names as he goes one-on-one with a man who has been the face of World Wrestling Entertainment for nearly a decade in a grudge match at WrestleMania 30 in New Orleans.
In 10 career matches at WrestleMania, Cena has accumulated a record of 7-3. Only The Undertaker, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Kane and Triple H have more WM wins under their belt.
Cena has either challenged for/defended a World Championship or faced “The Brahma Bull” at each event since WrestleMania 21. He’s been a mainstay in the main event picture for so long that it’s a shock to the system to see him in anything other than that.
With all due respect to Wyatt, he’s not an established enough performer to be placed in the same category of some of Cena’s past WrestleMania opponents. He’s only been on the main roster since July of last year, he’s never won championship gold and he’s never been in the main event of a major PPV.
Yet here we are.
Take it as a testament to how much stock management has in the Wyatt character. The WWE is severely lacking in heels who can get over with the fans on a different level. Orton and Batista are both struggling in their roles, while Brock Lesnar is only working a part-time schedule. The big heat grabbers at the moment are Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. That’s not good enough.
Wyatt is a once-in-a-lifetime character. While his résumé leaves a lot to be desired, the WWE must know that they’ve caught lightning in a bottle with this gimmick of his. Wyatt has never had a gold strap around his waist, but that’s not necessary for his demented and methodical persona. His goals are more about beating the system, spreading his propaganda and using thought-provoking wordplay to warp the minds of his followers and the WWE Universe.
As far as his in-ring work is concerned, Wyatt will never outshine the likes of a Daniel Bryan or Cesaro with his technical prowess, but what he lacks in pure skill, he makes up for in sheer force. As was the case when he worked under the Husky Harris name, Wyatt is “The Army Tank with a Ferrari Engine.” He’s extremely agile for a big man and can move around the ring with relative ease at nearly 290 pounds.
Cena has reached the point where wins and losses don’t phase him. He’s always going to be at or near the top of the pecking order of WWE superstars until he decides to hang up his boots for good. Cena has a demographic of fans who will continue to support him, while those who wish he would just go away will at least give him some sort of reaction whenever he appears.
A victory in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will do absolutely nothing for Cena, but it could catapult Wyatt to even greater heights.
If Cena emerges victorious, it will be looked at as just another day in the office. He would be overcoming his obstacles once again, defying the odds while putting an end to the reign of terror Wyatt has inflicted in recent months.
Been there, done that.
On the other end of the spectrum, defeating Cena at “The Grandest Stage of Them All” would solidify Wyatt’s spot as a major player, if that wasn’t already apparent. In fact, Wyatt hasn’t lost a match since the Jan. 13 edition of “Monday Night RAW” when he and Bryan were defeated in a steel cage match by The Usos. That’s quite the wave of momentum he’s riding.
If all plays out according to plan, WrestleMania 30 will end with Bryan hoisting the WWE World Heavyweight Championship up in the air while 70,000 fans chant “YES!” at the top of their lungs. That’s going to be your feel-good moment of the night.
With that being said, the WWE can afford to have Cena lose to Wyatt because that match isn’t going to make or break the show. Bryan vs. HHH, Lesnar vs. Undertaker and the main event are what people are going to remember.
Think of it as the Steve Austin vs. Scott Hall match from WrestleMania 18. There were big stars involved, but the match wound up in the middle of the card while other stories got more promotion and build. Cena vs. Wyatt is a significant feud, but there are others which surpass it.
Not just anyone can face Cena on the biggest card of the year. This is Wyatt’s time to shine.
A kiss on the forehead. A visit from Sister Abigail.
1………2………..3.
The answer is obvious; Bray Wyatt should and WILL go over John Cena at WrestleMania 30.
