Seventeen years after the infamous “Montreal Screwjob” at the 1997 “Survivor Series” pay-per-view, WWE Hall of Famer Bret “The Hitman” Hart and referee Earl Hebner have resolved their issues.
Hebner was the official in the ring when Hart defended his WWF Championship against Shawn Michaels during the show. He rang the bell when Hart was locked in the sharpshooter, even though the champion didn’t submit.
This resulted in one of the most controversial moments in the history of professional wrestling as Hart left for World Championship Wrestling and Vince McMahon, who was ringside for the match, became the biggest heel in the business.
At a recent Big Time Wrestling Event in Prince George, Virginia on Oct. 11, Hart and Hebner met in the middle of the ring.
Hart told fans that Hebner got a raw deal and most of the slack from what happened on that fateful evening.
TNA and ROH star Matt Hardy filmed the above video. “It was a touching moment to see two of the most famous characters in pro wrestling bury the hatchet and find peace and closure,” he said.
Editor’s Note
Time heals all. If Shawn Michaels and Bret can bury the hatchet, anything is possible. Now with Earl and Bret publicly burying the hatchet, we can all move on from the incident.
