Former WWE United States Champion Rusev suffered a lower leg injury during a match with Ryback at the May 26 “Smackdown” tapings.
The Bulgarian Brute is scheduled to be one of six competitors (Ryback, R-Truth, King Barrett, Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus) vying for the vacant WWE Intercontinental Championship at “Elimination Chamber” on May 31.
The title was vacated by former champion Daniel Bryan after he revealed he wasn’t medically cleared to perform for the foreseeable future.
PWInsider.com is now reporting that Rusev will appear at the pay-per-view in some capacity, although whether or not he’ll be performing remains to be seen.
If Rusev is pulled from the match, Bray Wyatt is rumored to be his replacement.
In a sign of things to come, Rusev has been removed from upcoming WWE Live Events, indicating how serious the injury may be.
WrestlingRumors.net will continue to update Rusev’s status as we head into the pay-per-view on Sunday evening.
Editor’s Note
The curse of working a long-term program with John Cena continues. It happened to Bray Wyatt last year, and now it’s happening to Rusev. One of WWE’s biggest heels is now on the sidelines, capping off a tumultuous five-month span where he went on a noticeable losing-streak on pay-per-view, lost his title and then lost his manager, Lana. Yikes.
