The #GiveDivasAChance movement was the start of WWE’s Divas division being taken more seriously by both the WWE Universe and management.
PWInsider.com reported back in March that the company was planning on making major changes to the division, although the specifics of those changes were unknown.
WWE COO Triple H and Stephanie McMahon want nothing more than to change how women are perceived in WWE, per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
This has a lot to do with Stephanie’s relationship with UFC star Ronda Rousey and the success she’s having as one of the world’s most dominant athletes.
Neither Triple H or Stephanie are huge fans of the UFC, but they recognize Rousey’s star power and how “it’s a different era” with women in sports.
WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has a different stance, though, as he still sees women maintaining the same role they currently have on the roster.
Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch put on a Match of the Year candidate at “NXT Takeover: Unstoppable” on May 20, proving once again that women can have quality matches/storylines if given an opportunity to do so.
Editor’s Note
NXT’s women have earned a reputation for being sensational workers between the ropes, something a majority of WWE’s Divas have yet to garner on their own. If Hunter and Stephanie want to change how women are perceived, perhaps calling up the likes of Charlotte, Bayley, Sasha and Becky will do the trick. Wrestling still matters.
