At ROH’s “All-Star Extravaganza” on Sept. 6 in Toronto, Jay Briscoe defeated Michael Elgin to become the new Ring of Honor World Champion.
Briscoe joins Austin Aries as the only two-time champions in company history.
Following a bucklebomb in the corner, Briscoe recovered and delivered a Jay Driller to the champion, leaving him down and out for a count of three.
In July of 2013, Briscoe was forced to relinquish the gold while playing out an injury angle. The real reason behind the strip was due to rumors of Briscoe signing with World Wrestling Entertainment, as well as homophobic comments he made on Twitter during the time of his reign.
Since that time, Briscoe has gone on an impressive streak of having never been pinned or submitted for over two years. That steak will continue with the title back in his possession.
In a surprising move, the ROH World Championship match didn’t close the IPPV. The Young Bucks vs. reDRagon in a 2-out-of-3 falls match for the Tag Team Championship was the main event.
Editor’s Note
As someone who attended the event live, watching Briscoe become World Champion left me and everyone else in attendance speechless. ROH World Champion’s usually get lengthy title reigns, but in the case of Elgin, his only lasted a little over two months.
