Wrestling and MMA fans alike continue to patiently wait as Phillip “CM Punk” Brooks trains for his first real fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
While a concrete date for his debut with the company hasn’t been set in stone, several dates/time periods have been tossed around in previous interviews, with UFC President Dana White believing it will take place during the first quarter of 2016.
During a media session as part of International Fight Week, Punk revealed that he’s hoping to get in the octagon before the year is up (with h/t to UFC.com).
“I say this all the time: I’d love to fight tomorrow,” Punk said. “But I want to be as prepared as I possibly can be and I will be. I’m still shooting for December. It might be January, I’m not sure. But I’ll be ready when I fight.”
He also mentioned how welterweight (170 pounds) would be his weight class of choice.
“I woke up at 190 this morning, so I could make 185 in a couple of hours if I needed to,” he said. “But I think fighting at 185 would probably be a bad idea. Those guys are a lot bigger than me. I think 170 is doable.”
Editor’s Note
Punk’s first UFC fight will be a monumental moment for the company. While not a distinguished fighter (yet), his star power will draw huge numbers and hopefully be the start of a successful run as a Mixed Martial Artist.
