Not since the days of Davey Boy Smith, aka the British Bulldog, has the WWE been seemingly so preoccupied with the United Kingdom. Recently, Triple H (who as you may remember began his WWE career as stuffy blueblood Hunter Hearst Helmsley) announced a tournament to crown the first UK Champion. The champ will even have their own belt, and it looks a lot nicer than the Universal Championship. That’s going to annoy some folks. The two night tournament is taking place in Blackpool on January 14 and 15, 2017, with the whole event being shown on WWE Network. Well, if you haven’t gotten tickets for the event already, you better get ready to watch it on said network, because the event has already sold out.

Yes, the WWE UK Championship Tournament has already sold out over both nights. The event was announced on December 15, and it was sold out by December 16. Gimmicky tournament to try and strengthen their foothold in the United Kingdom or not, clearly fans were into the idea of the UK having their own championship. Or maybe they are just really into the WWE, and they’re willing to take what they can get.

The tournament will feature 16 wrestlers, and one assumes that the winner may find themselves appearing on your more traditional WWE programs at some point. Here’s hoping that at least one of the competitors have a cockney chimney sweep gimmick straight out of Mary Poppins. And fingers crossed we get to see a steak and kidney pie used as a foreign object.
