A little while back, the WWE got a little buzz when it was announced that Kacy Catanzaro, who rose to fame on American Ninja Warrior, was training at the WWE Performance Center. It seems like a good career move for her, a chance to build on her minor celebrity from American Ninja Warrior that lets her use her clear athletic gifts. However, before she was a ninja warrior of the American persuasion, Catanzaro was a gymnast, which is of particular note for me, because I have long held the opinion that more female gymnasts should try and make a go of it in professional wrestling.

Wrestling has long been a bastion for washed out football players, boxers, and mixed martial artists. Sometimes, it has been a nice career move for successful athletes, such as Brock Lesnar or Ken Shamrock. For a while, the WWE wasn’t necessarily a place for former female athletes, though. Former models? Sure, but athleticism was not necessarily at the forefront of the WWE’s checklist for women. Fortunately, the WWE has legitimized their women’s wrestlers, and it is the perfect environment for a former gymnast.

Successful gymnasts are, obviously, great athletes. They can jump and flip and do all sort of impressive things. Additionally, gymnastics is not necessarily a long term career plan. There aren’t really “professional” gymnasts, and it is a young woman’s game. Now, say you are McKayla Maroney. You’re 21, but your Olympic gymnastics days are over. You have name recognition, though, more than even a woman like Catanzaro. The WWE would probably love to have that name recognition, and you could have way to use your athleticism for professional gain. Imagine if a gymnast really took to wrestling, too. The high flying moves they could pull off would be fantastic.

The WWE is always looking for new talent. Maybe Catanzaro will be the first in a longline of notable former gymnasts who try their hand at the world of professional wrestling. It could be a real coup for women’s wrestling.

Do you think female gymnasts would make good wrestlers? Let us know in the comments, and check out the Wrestling Rumors Facebook page.
