The Undertaker was “rumored” to be appearing on tonight’s Monday Night RAW. Now, this is not so much a real rumor as it is a method of trying to entice people to watch RAW to see if The Undertaker shows up. The Dead Man is, ironically, a living legend, and one of the most popular wrestlers from a different era of WWE. There is also one element of The Undertaker that truly makes him a vestige of a bygone era; his name is The Undertaker.
Wrestlers don’t have names like The Undertaker anymore. That sort of gimmick simply isn’t done. The Undertaker is rare in a few ways. He’s still technically supernatural it seems, he is a wrestler with a secondary job (undertaking), and he doesn’t have a real name. Every wrestler these days has a “real” name. That is to say, a realistic name. Seth Rollins. Dean Ambrose. Kevin Owens. Even the wrestlers who have one names (Cesaro, Bayley, et al) have a “real” name. The Undertaker does not. It’s basically just him and fellow legend The Big Show.

Back in the day, though, The Undertaker wasn’t that rare. The Ultimate Warrior. Diesel. Man Mountain Rock. They didn’t have real names. They were more fantastical characters from a less realistic era of wrestling. The Undertaker is still kicking, though, even if he does appear infrequently. He’s an embodiment of an entire different era, right down to his moniker.
