Guys like Daniel Bryan may be getting the snip. I’m not talking about putting the sheers to that unruly beard or to reproductive body-parts. I’m talking about putting the snip to the “common man” routinely being presented as a champion. I, for one, am a happy man.
The fascination for the “common man” wrestler as opposed to the “super hero” began several years ago for guys like the “trash man”, as Big Cass dubbed Bryan:
Bryan reached the height of his career at WrestleMania 30, when he, “the common man”, won the WWE title. The reign was short-lived.
In the 90s, WWF championships were often held by larger than life characters such as Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and The Ultimate Warrior. These were men who one could easily imagine bounding out of a comic book and manifesting into real life action heroes. They were and still are people who inspire.
In the video below, we see Bryan hopping into the ring and quickly defeating a much more robust Batista. In the second video, we see Hulk Hogan in an epic and legendary battle with his worthy advisory, The Ultimate Warrior. Believability factor achieved.
In my estimation, WWE has had enough of pushing the “common man” as a champion and is returning to elevating the larger than life characters of yesteryear. I believe this is being expressed most recently through Lashley’s domination over Zayn and the scripts that Big Cass uses to demean Daniel Bryan. Remember, everything you hear Big Cass or Drew McIntyre say is a direct reverberation of what higher-ups in WWE want articulated to fans.
The first time the “Daniel Bryan” or “CM Punks” of the world gained traction in WWE was in 1995. Back then a guy who looks similar in ways to Bryan scored an upset victory over one of WWE’s primary cast members. That wrestler’s name was Barry Horowitz. You’ll see the comparison:
Today is a great day for wrestling fans who focus on the “Entertainment” aspect of wrestling with larger than life characters moving to the forefront. These include the likes of Elias, Drew McIntyre and Braun Strowman. WWE appears to be in the process reorganizing its main roster so they can get back to what WWE does best. Sell marketable characters who inspire ten million viewers per week to tune into their shows instead of just two.
Join me next time when I glorify all that is: Enzo Amore – WWE Kicking Themselves With Jordan’s and, for my YouTube solo-commentating challenge issued to Corey Graves. Will he accept and, can he keep up with the melodious tones of “The Goldmine”? I don’t think so. Details available next week.
Feel free to leave your comments regarding Daniel Bryan, but I will pay no attention to them whatsoever.
In closing, I am “The Goldmine” Alex Gold. Heel and Author.
