During the Sept. 1 episode of “Monday Night Raw,” WWE made it known that it had invited Michael Sam, the first gay NFL player to be drafted, to appear on the program. Even further, the company claimed it would give him an open microphone. While WWE.com would go on to publish an open letter to Sam, penned by WWE CBO Stephanie McMahon, it appears that Sam will not appear on the program.
During the evening of Sept. 2, the aforementioned letter and past Michael Sam advertisements have been removed from WWE.com and its YouTube channel. As of this writing, WWE’s original tweets from Monday remain on its Twitter account.
One reason that the advertisements and letter may have been removed is due to Michael Sam’s changed NFL status. Prior to the content being removed, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sam had been invited to take a physical for the Dallas Cowboys. The team with the statistically worst defense in the 2013 season reportedly wants to bring Sam on for its practice squad. If the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year passes his physical, a “Raw” appearance would likely be out of the equation.
Editor’s Note
With the content being removed, it very well looks like Sam and WWE had some sort of agreement. It was probably nixed due to Sam finding work in the NFL, possibly leading to WWE going after Jerry Springer for an appearance.
