As seen over WrestleMania XXX weekend in addition to “Monday Night Raw” coverage on the WWE Network, former NFL player Shawne Merriman worked as a commentator for WWE. As we previously reported, WWE and Merriman agreed on terms for a contract, bringing “Lights Out” to WWE.
In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the newsletter provided an update on Merriman’s deal with WWE, reporting how WWE will utilize the three-time All-Pro NFL linebacker. The current idea is to bring Merriman up similar to how WCW once brought up Steve “Mongo” McMichael, who was a defensive lineman for the Chicago Bears, before working with both WCW and the WWF.
At first, Merriman will be trained as an announcer, leading to some television time for him. However, during that time, Merriman will also be trained as a wrestler. After WWE feels confident in him, he will be transitioned into a WWE Superstar.
Additionally, the report notes that there is now a renewed interest in bringing on former NFL players whose careers are over, yet are still young. Merriman is just 29 years old, as injuries plagued his career, leading to the early exit from the NFL.
Editor’s Note
I really like WWE’s idea on handling Merriman. His work as a commentator on the WWE Network was not too shabby and if he were to flame-out as a wrestler, it wouldn’t be too big of a loss for the company. While the company is bringing back former NFL players, WWE should also bring back the legendary NFL quarterback Tommy Maddox, the only XFL MVP to exist on the face of the Earth. On a more serious note, WWE should look into bringing in Pat McAfee, after his career ends.
