In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the newsletter gave an update on possible locations for WrestleMania, specifically in 2018. As we previously reported, WrestleMania 31 will occur in Santa Clara, Calif. in 2015. Additionally, it is all but confirmed that AT&T Stadium, formerly known as Cowboys Stadium, will host WrestleMania in 2016.
The newsletter is reporting that many cities have already begun their pushes to bring the “Show of Shows” to town for 2018. Representatives from cities such as Toronto, Philadelphia, Columbus, and Indianapolis reportedly met with WWE officials in New Orleans over WrestleMania weekend.
During these meetings, the team representing Columbus pitched the idea of holding the grand spectacle at Ohio Stadium, the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. The stadium holds 102,329 for Buckeyes games, meaning WWE could very well break its all-time attendance record with the event. However, the record is likely to be broken beforehand in 2016, assuming Arlington, Tex. and AT&T Stadium host the event.
These cities likely targeted the 2018 edition of WrestleMania because, as previously noted, 2015 and 2016 already have presumed hosts. Additionally, the newsletter reported that Orlando is the favorite for WrestleMania in 2017, though nothing is final.
Editor’s Note
I would love to see WrestleMania come to a city like Toronto or Columbus in 2018. I really want to cross off ‘going to a WrestleMania’ on my bucket list and for that to happen, the event will probably need to return to the Northeast. If it comes to Toronto, I could multitask and cross off ‘visiting the Hockey Hall of Fame’ as well. I guess Philadelphia could be a last resort for me, as I’m from Pittsburgh!
