On the Aug. 25 edition of “Monday Night Raw,” Cesaro defeated Rob Van Dam to become the number-one contender for the United States Championship. Following the night, it was very likely that Cesaro would be going up against the champion, Sheamus, at “Night of Champions.”
WWE has now made it official, announcing the match on both its website and Twitter account, on Friday, Aug. 29. The two have developed a rivalry over the past couple of weeks of WWE programming, and the two were even verbally jousting at the “WWE 2K15” roster reveal during the weekend of “SummerSlam.”
As of the date of the announcement, this bout is just the second confirmed match for “Night of Champions.” It joins WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena, in a “SummerSlam” rematch, on the match card.
Sheamus has kept the United States Championship since winning it on the May 5 edition of “Monday Night Raw” in a 20-man battle royal. Sheamus captured the title by last eliminating Dean Ambrose, the former champion.
This will be the second time Sheamus attempts to defend his United States Championship against Cesaro on pay-per-view. At this year’s edition of “Payback,” Sheamus bested Cesaro with a roll-up pin.
Editor’s Note
Not shocked to see the match made official. Should be a good match, but I probably won’t look forward to it.
