Former United States Champion Rusev has been sidelined with an injury to his foot or ankle since a “Smackdown” taping on May 26. In a match with current WWE Intercontinental Champion Ryback, Rusev suffered the injury, which resulted in the big man needing assistance to the back. Rusev’s injury left him unable to compete in an Elimination Chamber match for the vacant Intercontinental Championship, which Ryback went on to win.
Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline recently provided a brief update on Rusev’s injury, and what may happen when the Bulgarian makes his return. According to Meltzer, it is believed that Rusev broke either his ankle or foot upon taking a bump over the top rope from Ryback in their “Smackdown” match.
Going forward, based on what he has heard, Meltzer believes that WWE may force Rusev to wrestle in boots from now on, upon his return from injury. During his time in NXT and on the main WWE roster, spanning about two years, Rusev has not donned any traditional wrestling boots, instead choosing to simply wear tape above his feet.
Editor’s Note
Upon his return, it would make sense for Rusev to wear wrestling boots, or at the very least something a bit more protective than tape.
