On Saturday, March 21, Rey Mysterio was unfortunately part of a tragic and freak wrestling accident, resulting in the passing of AAA star El Hijo Del Perro Aguayo. During a match at a show in Tijuana, Mexico, Mysterio was involved in a tag match against Perro Aguayo Jr. Towards the end of the match, Mysterio hit him with a dropkick to set up his patented “619.” Mysterio’s dropkick caught Perro Aguayo Jr. in an unfortunate spot, resulting in three cracked vertebrae. According to ABC News, the cracked vertebrae was Aguayo’s cause of death, with him unable to be revived upon entrance into a nearby hospital.
Mysterio, who has been expressing his deepest thoughts and prayers for Aguayo Jr., is said to be considering retirement, according to multiple Spanish news outlets. According to Noticieros.Televisa.com, Mysterio’s friend and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) star Rey Bucanero has been stating that Mysterio is considering a retirement from professional wrestling.
Before the tragedy, Rey Mysterio was just getting started on the next chapter of his wrestling career. Mysterio officially departed WWE on Feb. 26, quickly signing on with AAA, and getting booked for a number of appearances on the independent circuit.
Editor’s Note
You can’t really blame Mysterio for retiring, should he choose to. I could only imagine the enormous burden on his shoulders. Should Mysterio retire, it would be cool for him to have a retirement match in honor of Perro Aguayo Jr., in which the match’s proceeds goes in his honor.
