During the first weekend of September, El Rey Network’s new “Lucha Underground” series will begin television tapings. The series, featuring work of the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA) wrestling promotion, will debut on Oct. 8. As we previously reported former WWE Diva Maxine will be featured on the series, but recently released WWE star Evan Bourne has turned down an offer for the series.
With tapings fast approaching, PWInsider has published a report on all the information it has in regards to “Lucha Underground.”
The series will be headed by a former WWE creative writer named Chris DeJoseph. Alongside DeJoseph will be former WWE writers Chris Roach and Matt Stollman.
Many wrestling stars have been confirmed for the series. Some of the marquee names include former WWE stars John Morrison and Chavo Guerrero, and Dragon Gate USA titleholder Ricochet. In addition to those three, many other stars are reportedly set for the series, among them: Ricky Manderas (Messias) in TNA, Martin Casaus, Famous B, Matt Cross, B-Boy, Ricky Reyes, Blue Demon Jr., Sexy Star, Drago, Fenix, and Pentagon Jr.
Former WCW star and marquee AAA figure Konnan will also be involved, likely in a non-wrestling role. Former WWE referee Marty Elias is also booked in some capacity. Many of these aforementioned stars will likely be utilized through new personalities and characters created on the series.
The announce team for the series will feature former WWE commentator Matt Striker and former WCW World Tag Team Champion Vampiro.
More television tapings will occur in September and October, scheduled for five of the next seven weekends in the coming months.
Press releases for “Lucha Underground” state that it will also have “monthly and quarterly specials,” in addition to live pay-per-view events. In due time, licensing and merchandising for the production will occur.
