As seen on the June 30 edition of “Monday Night Raw,” Bad News Barrett was stripped of his Intercontinental Championship due to a shoulder injury he suffered during “Smackdown” tapings on June 24. Additionally, Michael Cole noted that Barrett would be out of action for months.
Because of Barrett’s injury status, at “Battleground,” there will be a battle royal to crown a new Intercontinental Champion. On the July 1 showing of “Main Event,” many names were added to the battle royal. Even further, an unbelievable and undefeated WWE Superstar was added during “Smackdown” tapings. (contains spoilers)
Bad News Barrett’s recovery began on Wednesday, July 2, as WWE.com is reporting that Barrett has underwent successful shoulder surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jeff Dugas in Birmingham, Ala.
Dr. Chris Amann said the following in regards to the surgery:
“Bad News Barrett underwent a ligament reconstruction in his shoulder, as well as a distal clavicle resection, where the end of the collar bone is shaved off. The operation went very well, he’s resting comfortably.”
Barrett’s injury could not have come at a worse time, as it came during his final preparation for “Money in the Bank.” At the event, he was the odds-on favorite to win the traditional Money in the Bank Ladder match, receiving a contract for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. With Barrett unable to compete, it would instead be Seth Rollins that came out victorious.
Editor’s Note
Good to hear Barrett’s surgery went well. Still sucks that he’s going to be out for months. His career in WWE may very well be finished, unless he is able to regain the momentum he had.
