As noted in the past, AMC had been considering a possible reality series, which would follow Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan’s Resistance Pro wrestling promotion. The day after WWE had announced its new deal with NBC Universal, AMC confirmed that it will indeed air a reality series following Resistance Pro.
Resistance Pro, based out of Chicago, will have a first season that will contain eight one-hour episodes.
The following is promotional material for the show:
“Corgan in his latest undertaking as creative director of Resistance Pro, a Chicago-based wrestling league. Corgan goes behind the scenes of this fascinating world, from creating storylines to choreographing fights to managing intense post-match locker room arguments, revealing that the most dramatic stories often take place outside of the ring. Series is produced by Left/Right (Small Town Security, This American Life, Mob Wives) and executive produced by Ken Druckerman, Banks Tarver, Billy Corgan, and Ghen Maynard.”
Some have speculated that the timing of AMC’s announcement was no coincidence, as AMC had been linked to WWE in the past. When it was revealed WWE’s deal with NBCUniversal expired, AMC was rumored as a possible home to WWE programming. In fact, when negotiations between WWE and AMC were revealed, WWE’s stock skyrocketed.
However, as stated, WWE is remaining with NBCUniversal. In somewhat of a cruel twist, WWE’s stocks have plummeted since then, causing Vince McMahon to lose his billionaire status.
Editor’s Note
I could definitely see myself giving a chance on this new program, as I watch a good share of AMC programs and like Corgan’s work in both the music and wrestling industries. As for the timing, I do not think this was a coincidence, and this may very well have been a subtle dig at WWE.
