We’re a little over a week away from WWE’s second biggest show of the year, Royal Rumble, and one of the matches on the show will be for the Universal Championship, as Kevin Owens will defend against Roman Reigns. Also, Owens’ on-screen best friend, Chris Jericho, will be locked in a shark cage above the ring during the match.
Almost everyone is predicting that Roman Reigns will win the Universal Championship next Sunday night, but according to Cageside Seats, the ex-Shield member might not walk out of the Alamodome with Raw’s top prize.
“Roman Reigns is penciled in to win the Universal championship at some point but it may not happen at Royal Rumble.”
For the last two years, Reigns has been heavily booed at the Royal Rumble event, and he’ll likely be heavily booed again on January 29, which is why WWE may not put the title on him at the Rumble event.
The Raw brand does have one more pay-per-view prior to WrestleMania 33, as the Fastlane show will take place in early-March, so Reigns could win the Universal Championship at that event.

Rumor has it that Reigns will face one of two men at WrestleMania 33: Braun Strowman or The Undertaker. As of right now, it’s unclear if his match will involve the Universal Championship.
