Typically when WWE creates a faction, they hope that one or two of its members will spin off and become a main event superstar. But, when they created The Shield, they were able to produce three top guys who will likely be carrying the company for the next five to ten years.
On Monday, Roman Reigns appeared on ESPN’s Cheap Heat podcast, and he was asked about where he would rank The Shield in terms of greatest factions of all time. He was also asked about their breakup in 2014, and in his opinion, the trio was broken up too early.
“You know, I think we’re definitely in the top five. It’s tough because you have different situations within companies with NWO and DX and with the whole company war, the ratings war and stuff like that. But the difference between The Shield and everybody else is we didn’t have names. Seth and Dean, they were kinda indy darlings, so they had a little bit of an internet buzz, but as far as casual fans and mass media, nobody knew who they were. Nobody who I was — I didn’t have any wrestling following. So for us to come in and make a name for ourselves, and to be in the position that we were in, working right away with top dogs and then slowly taking over the main event scene. I still to this day feel like we broke up too early. I really do. I feel like we had a real nice babyface run in us. But it just is what it is.”

WWE has been hinting at a Shield reunion over the last couple of months, so maybe they’ll be able to have that babyface run that Reigns referred to at some point this year.
