In the video above, you’ll see the Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock match from SummerSlam in August of 2002. It turned out to be one of The Rock’s last high profile matches, as he’s had less than 10 matches since.
The event took place in New York, which means that the fans in attendance were smarter than the average WWE crowd, and they knew that The Rock was leaving the company following the match. So, if you’re confused as to why they’re booing The Rock, and cheering Lesnar, well, now you know.
Interesting Note: The Rock and Brock Lesnar were originally scheduled to main event WrestleMania 30. However, The Rock suffered a major injury during his match with John Cena at WrestleMania 29, which prevented WWE from shooting the Lesnar/Rock angle the next night on Raw.
Since then, an insurance issue has prevented The Rock from returning to the ring. Yes, he had a match with Erick Rowan back at WrestleMania 32, but it was less than 10 seconds long. Essentially, the insurance issue prohibits The Rock from having long, competitive matches in WWE, as movie studios are afraid that he’ll suffer yet another serious injury.
The Rock is probably interested in having another match, and, who knows, maybe he’ll be a part of next year’s WrestleMania. But, will we see him wrestle there? Probably not, unless he’s able to resolve the aforementioned insurance issue.
