Cruiserweights in WWE haven’t really been a part of their programming since WWE retired the Cruiserweight Championship back in 2007.
Since then, there have been cruiserweights. However, they haven’t been featured as stronger competitors even though the main event talent has become more agile and athletic over the past decade.
Last night on Monday Night Raw, Stephanie McMahon announced that due to the early success of the WWE Network’s “Cruiserweight Classic,” Raw will be featuring a Cruiserweight division that will be exclusive to Raw.
According to a rumor from DailyWrestlingNews.com, the company signing Kota Ibushi and Gran Metalik, who is known as Mascara Dorada in Mexico, is just the beginning for cruiserweights in the classic receiving contracts.
At the moment, WWE has announced a Cruiserweight division, but now they need to fill it with cruiserweights, and most of the talent will likely come from the thirty-two man roster of the “Cruiserweight Classic.”
There are said to be several names on the radar of WWE to see how they all do in their matches throughout the tournament. Ibsuhi and Gran Metalik only needed one match to air before they were signed.
The list of some potential stars who could be signed includes Zack Sabre, Jr., Cedric Alexander, Lince Dorado, Akira Tozawa, and Jack Gallagher to start. We’ll see what happens over the next few weeks.
