Last night on SmackDown, American Alpha faced The Usos in the semifinals of the Tag Team Tournament to determine the first SmackDown Tag Team Champions.
Although Chad Gable and Jason Jordan won the match, The Usos attacked them, turned heel, and “injured” Gable, which will prevent them from being able to compete in the finals this Sunday at “Backlash.”
First and foremost, Chad Gable’s injury is one-hundred percent for storyline purposes, and there is nothing actually wrong with him or his leg.
Having said that, there is a reason why WWE decided to book the “injury” angle with American Alpha and it has to do with rebuilding The Usos more than it has to do with protecting Alpha.
According to a report from RingSideNews.com, the plan is for The Usos to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at “Backlash,” so a heel team is on top for Alpha and Slater and Rhyno to chase.
It looks like The Usos are going to be the core of SmackDown’s Tag Team division for the immediate future until WWE decides it is the right time to pull the trigger on Alpha or another team.
Do you think it is a smart move to build SmackDown’s Tag Team division around The Usos?
