That would be a weird one. If you follow WWE news fairly closely, you know just how obsessive they can be about controlling things. WWE does not like to let anything happen without their official consent and sometimes this can go a little bit too far. At the same time though, it can often be the best decision to be made, though now the wrestlers might be making a change.
One of the things that WWE has cracked down on in recent years are maneuvers which could damage the head and neck. This isn’t exactly a surprise as there is no reason to risk wrestlers having unnecessary damage to such vital parts of their bodies. A bad shot to either part could change both their careers and lives forever, but one particular move might be coming back into the fold.
According to Fightful.com, several wrestlers are pushing for the return of the piledriver. While the standard version of the move is still banned, the Tombstone and Canadian Destroyer variations have been used regularly, with the latter being used more frequently as of late. The theory among the wrestlers is that if the move does not include the name piledriver, it does not have the same connotation, which is why the move has been allowed to slip back in through various forms. There is no word on if WWE is considering bringing the move back in its regular form.
The piledriver is still around. Check out some of its history:
Opinion: I’m not sure on this one from either side. I understand that some wrestlers might want the move to come back, but I really don’t need for it to return. With what we know about concussions and head injuries, it really isn’t something I need to see. Of course it can be made safer, but the visual alone is going to make a lot of people uncomfortable and I’m not sure if that is something WWE wants to do.
