That’s a new one. Wrestling is a unique sport in that while everything comes down to the same kind of action, there are all kinds of ways to present things. This can come in the form of different kinds of matches, with gimmicks and stipulations offering their own twists. Every so often a brand new concept will be introduced and that appears to be the case again with a fresh idea.

According to Fightful Select, WWE debuted a new concept called “WWE Speed” this week before SmackDown. The full details of the concept are currently unknown, there were two matches taped, featuring Axiom vs. Cedric Alexander and Bronson Reed vs. Nathan Frazer. The matches were points based with a five minute time limit and appeared to have been filmed for a broadcast, with a WWE Speed logo included.
According to PWInsider.com, the match will include wrestlers competing against both each other as well as the clock in some way. There will be one point awarded for a win and one deducted for a loss, with a tie seeing no points change. It is not clear when or where the matches or concept will be airing.
WWE has had some time based concepts before. Check out some of them over the years:
Opinion: I’m not sure how exactly the concept here is going to work but what matters here is that more wrestlers are getting a chance to do something. The basics of the idea do sound interesting and I’m curious to see how it goes. This has the potential to be something fun and that is always a good thing, so hopefully WWE can make the concept work, which can be rather tricky.
