He da man! While his latest WWE run might not have been the best received in the world, Goldberg was the hottest thing in WCW and one of the hottest things in wrestling history at one point. The undisputed peak of his popularity was on July 6, 1998 when he defeated Hollywood Hogan to become the WCW World Champion in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. WWE is now looking back at the moment.
The company has released a short clip of Goldberg defeating Hogan for the title in honor of its upcoming nineteenth anniversary. The whole match ran just over eight minutes in its entirety and is available on multiple DVDs. While the clip itself is short, it does include part of Bobby Heenan’s very excited celebration. Here’s the video:
Goldberg vs. Hollywood Hogan - WCW Championship Match: Nitro, July 6, 1998
Opinion: I know WCW gets a lot of very well deserved venom and flack for some of the things they did over their long tenure but this is an instance where they got things right. The fans wanted to see Goldberg as the top man in the company and for once, WCW pulled the trigger and gave them exactly what they wanted. It was fast, it was well done and the pop was worth it, just as it was designed to be.
