Remember him? There are all kinds of talented wrestlers throughout the world and while a good many of them wrestle for major promotions, some of them are full time independent stars. It can be a big deal when one of them shows up on a major wrestling show, especially if they are someone who has been around before. That was the case again this weekend.

The opening of this week’s AEW Collision saw TNT Champion Adam Copeland issue an open challenge for a title shot. Matt Cardona answered the challenge before losing to Copeland. This marks Cardona’s first match in the company since 2020 when he wrestled in a pair of tag matches. According to Fightful Select, Cardona has not signed a contract with AEW and remains a free agent. There is no word on if Cardona is expected to wrestle again for AEW in the near future.

Opinion: This was a cool surprise and that is the point of this kind of an open challenge. Cardona is not a regular in AEW but he is someone the fans are going to know and he has a history with Copeland on top of that. Give the fans a bit of a thrill and see what happens when they watch the show, as it brings up the question of who might show up in the future. It was a cool move and it could even help in the future.
